An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 struck Yushu County to the north of Gebchak Gonpa on April 14, 2010. The seat of Yushu, Jyekundo, was flattened by its devastating force. Wangdrak Rinpoche has in his direct care 35 children left orphaned from this tragedy.
